What an NFC medical ID actually is
At its simplest, an NFC medical ID is a tiny chip embedded in a tag, card, or piece of jewellery. It carries no readable text of its own; instead, tapping a compatible phone against it opens a linked web page, the way tapping a contactless payment card triggers a transaction rather than displaying anything on the card itself.
That web page is where the actual information lives: who the person is, who to contact, and any medical details they have chosen to share. Because the page is hosted online and the tag only stores a link, the information behind it can be updated at any time without needing to replace or reprint the physical tag.
Most NFC medical ID products, including RiderSOS tags, also carry a printed QR code as a fallback, since not every phone has NFC turned on by default, and a QR code needs nothing more than a working camera to read.
Why motorcyclists need a different setup to a standard medical ID
Standard medical ID bracelets and pendants are designed around a simple assumption: someone will see the rider's wrist or neck. That assumption holds up reasonably well for a lot of everyday situations, but it breaks down in a lot of the situations that specifically matter to riders.
A motorcyclist involved in an incident is very often wearing a full-face helmet, riding gloves, and a jacket with long sleeves, all of which can cover or obscure a wrist-worn bracelet from a first responder or bystander who is not trained to specifically check for one. Fields you can leave switched off
Every field on a RiderSOS profile, including your name and date of birth, has its own visibility toggle. Nothing is shown by default just because it exists in your account; you choose what a scan reveals, and anything you leave off is not shown to anyone who taps or scans the tag.

What an NFC medical ID does not do
An NFC medical ID, RiderSOS or otherwise, supports contact and information sharing. It is not a substitute for calling 999 in a genuine emergency, and it does not guarantee that any specific person will see it, act on it, or reach you in time. Its value is in reducing the time and guesswork involved if and when someone does reach for it.
